PSARA Executive Director Mike Andrew Presented With Mother Jones Individual Award by WSLC

Introductory speech by Emmanuel Flores:

 

Hello sisters, brothers, and siblings. My name is Emmanuel Flores, I use he/him pronouns, and I have the honor to staff the WSLC Workforce Development Standing Committee.


Mother Jones told us to “mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living.” Those words have guided the labor movement for generations. Since 2001, the Washington State Labor Council has honored that spirit through the Mother Jones Award. For more than two decades, this award has recognized people and organizations that show courage, compassion, and solidarity.

Tonight, the WSLC Workforce Development Standing Committee is proud to continue that tradition.


This year's recipient has spent decades building bridges between movements, bringing together labor activists, retirees, and LGBTQ+ workers in the fight for dignity, equality, and justice. As a journalist, organizer, labor leader, and advocate, he has dedicated his career to ensuring working people -- and those too often left out of the conversation -- have a voice and a seat at the table. Whether defending Social Security and Medicare, advancing LGBTQ+ worker rights through Pride At Work, or serving as a leader within MLK Labor, he has lived the values that Mother Jones championed: solidarity, courage, and a willingness to fight for others.
