For 10 years Michael Righi helped readers of the Retiree Advocate understand the modern capitalist economy. And he did more than that. He offered an alternative vision of a people-centered system where profit is not the driving force of the economy.
Michael was an editor’s dream. He had a gift for making complicated issues simple – but never simplistic – and for writing about serious topics with wit and humor. Advocate readers looked to Michael to help them interpret how the world works.
With this selection from his articles, readers can keep doing that. Some of these articles may be 10 years old, but Michael’s analysis is as timely as ever, as the USA seems unable to escape cycles of looting by the super-rich.
The book is divided into six chapters: The US Economy; Wealth and Income Inequality; Climate; Globalization; Taxes; and Book Reviews. Each of the first five examines a particular aspect of the modern capitalist economy. The sixth presents some books Michael – a constant reader – found interesting or useful.
Running through all Michael’s articles is the ever-present theme – every billionaire is a policy failure. The enormous concentration of wealth and power at the high end of the class structure, Michael warns again and again, will be deadly for humanity and the planet we all live on.
The book is also illustrated with photos from Michael’s life as an activist, some from Bobby Righi’s personal collection, others from the Retiree Advocate’s archive
The brilliant cover art is by Thomas Hobbs and Matteo Vianello.
Please join us to launch this selection of Michael's articles on Saturday, October 3, at 3:00 p.m., hosted by Rueben's Canning Line at Reuben's Brews, 800 NW 46th Street in Seattle.
